[123] Woodstock: Small Town, Big History

Date: September 12th, 2008 | Comments : none | Categories: Family Vacation, Destinations, Romantic Getaways, Mountain Getaways.

Long before the Woodstock festival of ‘69 became cemented into music history, the town which lent its name to the event was internationally recognized as a center for American artists. In 1902, the famous Byrdcliffe Art and Crafts colony was founded in Woodstock, New York, in the heart of the Catskill Mountains. Soon after, the Art Students League of NYC began a renowned summer school in the region. The then small community of farmers and tanners was joined by a influx of performers, painters, artists, and musicians. Destiny was set in motion.

Today, Woodstock retains its creative heart, though it has not forgotten its roots. Wineries and vineyards coexist with world class galleries. Farmer’s markets, museums, and performing arts centers are all present in this quiet rural community. Shopping, dining, and Woodstock lodging are all splendid. Entertainment and activities are plentiful. Visitors will find a perfect pairing of relaxing countryside charm and a world-class culture scene.

[113] Outer Banks Pirates, Ghosts, and Lost Colonies!!

Date: July 16th, 2008 | Comments : none | Categories: Family Vacation, Destinations, Beach Vacation, Romantic Getaways, Destination Weddings.

blackbeard.jpgThere are many destinations in the United States that are home to a dark history, places where great and terrible events occurred, places where restless spirits forever wander on cold and foggy nights. None, however, are as steeped in fact and fiction, history and creepy lore as the Outer Banks of North Carolina. These barrier islands have been the home of native Americans, the stomping grounds of notorious pirates, and even a colony lost forever to time and legend.

During the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 1700’s, several infamous pirates terrorized the coastal colonies of the Outer Banks. Captain Kidd, Calico Jack, Black Bellamy, and of course the individual that inspired a million pirate Halloween costumes: BLACKBEARD! These buccaneers of legend had a unquenchable thirst for adventure, something that the unpredictable weather and dangerous shoreline of the Outer Banks was happy to deliver. Plunder was their other great vice, much to the distress of high seas merchants who suffered greatly under their looting.

Blackbeard in particular earned a terrible reputation built on rumor and fear. To frighten his enemies and victims, the towering Blackbeard would tie slow burning canon fuses to his beard that would billow smoke around his head and upper body. So adept at striking terror in others, many of his would be victims would surrender without any fight at all. And despite his inevitable defeat and beheading, locals claim Blackbeard remains a fearful presence in Ocracoke where his decapitated body is still seen searching for its lost head. Local legend also claims that whoever follows the moonlight glistening on the water to its end will find Blackbeard’s lost treasure, guarded by the devil himself!

Another creepy tale of Outer Banks ghost is the Gray Man of Hatteras, who is often seen roaming between Cape Point and the lighthouse. A friendly and helpful spirit, the gray man beckons residents to seek shelter as storms approach the battered shoreline. Locals will also tell tales of the sunken Carrol Deering, known as the phantom schooner, from which is heard frightening cries and moans of the dead at sea!

None of the tales and legends of the Outer Banks is quite as mysterious and enduring as the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke, Virginia. In the late 16th century, Britain attempted to establish a permanent English colony on Roanoke Island. 121 colonists were led by John White to join the fifteen men already there, but upon arrival, all 15 men were gone with only the bones of a single man discovered. After a time, White returned to England to acquire supplies, but due to war with Spain and a string of bad luck, he was unable to return to Roanoke for three years. What he found has become one of the greatest mysteries of American history. He found no one. There was no sign of struggle, no graves, and only a single word carved into the fort post as a clue: Croatoan.

The mystery of the Lost Colony has never been solved!

For guests to these mysterious islands steeped in unique history, make sure to view The Lost Colony, an outdoor drama inspired by the mysterious disappearance of the Roanoke Colonists. Also be sure to swing by Teach’s Hole, a pirate exhibit and specialty shop! For lodging, check out Outer Banks vacation rentals through Sun Realty!

[110] A Disney Vacation for Less

Date: June 18th, 2008 | Comments : none | Categories: Family Vacation, Destinations, Golf Vacation.

disney.jpg Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is one of the largest tourist retreats in the world. Disney is a staple of American culture and it is expected the nearly every American family with the means and small children will make the pilgrimage to the Magic Kingdom at least once before adolescence sets in.

Unfortunately, larger families or groups traveling to Orlando will find accommodations at the park’s many resorts can be extremely expensive. Multiple rooms and dining out for every meal increases a vacation’s price tag considerably.

For some families, the solution has been to rent an entire vacation home near the parks. This option has appeal on a number of levels. With multiple bedrooms, everyone can have their own bed and privacy while all remaining under the same roof. Fully equipped kitchens allow for family meals without the hefty bill. Private pools allow for a cool retreat after a long day in the Florida Sun. And most importantly, a vacation rental for a week will often cost considerably less than resort accommodations.

Lowery’s Vacation Homes specializes in renting Orlando vacation homes to the Disney vacationer. Browse accommodations online!
